Lewis Pugh Foundation
Over many years of swimming, I have witnessed enormous changes in our oceans. In some places, the waters where I first swam are almost unrecognisable today.
Raising awareness matters, but it is not enough. Attention must lead to protection.
In 2016, I established the Lewis Pugh Foundation to help secure that protection. While the swims capture attention, the Foundation works quietly behind the scenes to turn that attention into lasting results.
We work with governments, scientists and local communities to safeguard vulnerable areas of ocean and rivers, and to strengthen long-term protection where it matters most. This work takes patience and persistence.
To date, we have helped protect more than 3.5 million km² of vulnerable ocean. To put this in perspective, it’s an area larger than Western Europe. But there are still many places that urgently need protection.
